KUL carries out fundamental and applied research in all academic disciplines with a clear international orientation. The scientific staff counts over 5,100 researchers, including 1,800 senior researchers. European surveys rank KUL among the top European universities in terms of output. With over 10,800 international peer-reviewed publications (2005-2007), it is the 6th European university in the 2008 Leiden bibliometric ranking. To date, more than 80 spin-offs are created and the total patent portfolio comprises around 280 patent families. KUL has considerable experience with European research projects. In FP6, KUL was ranked 4th university as for number of participations in FP6 contracts (267). So far, KUL obtained almost 160 FP7 projects for a total budget of about 70 million € (2007-2009).

The Department of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation - MSI is one of the five departments of the Faculty of Economics and Applied Economics of KUL. Research and teaching at the department span the domains of managerial economics, industrial organisation, international business, innovation economics and management, political economy, and entrepreneurship. The department has produced a large set of publications in international leading academic journals and publishes about 25-35 papers in ISI journals yearly. The department has been active in major contract research projects coordinated by the European Commission, the OECD, and the Flemish and Federal Science Policy Units. Members of the department (including the PI) lead two associated policy research centres for the Flemish government: the Policy Research Centre for Innovation Indicators (ECOOM), and the Policy Research Centre for entrepreneurship and international entrepreneurship (STOIO).
