WIFO (Austrian Institute of Economic Research) is the leading institute of economic research in Austria and a hub for European analyses and policy advice. It was founded by Nobel laureate Friedrich August von Hayek and Ludwig von Mises in 1927. Its mission is to analyse economic developments in Austria and internationally, thereby contributing to the establishment of a sound basis for economic policy and entrepreneurial decision-making. Theory-based research that draws on the latest empirical methodologies and a solid knowledge of institutional and political structures are guarantees for the constant high level of performance for which WIFO is renowned.

WIFO has organised its activities in five research groups: (i) Macroeconomics and European Economic Policy, (ii) Labour market, income and social security, (iii) Industrial economics, innovation and international competition, (iv) Structural change and regional developments, and (v) Environment, agriculture and energy. WIFO's internal quality strategy and its Scientific Board (consisting of renowned persons from universities and international organisations) are guarantees for the high impact of WIFO's research. Its incorporation in international scientific networks widens its performance spectrum and ability to research on European and world-wide problems. Among WIFO's clients are national governments, institutions as well as OECD, European Union and other international organisations.
