The Institute of Social Ecology Vienna (SEC) is a subdivision of the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies (IFF) at UNI-KLU (Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt). Research and teaching at the Institute of Social Ecology deals with the interrelationship of social and natural systems in the context of sustainable development. Research is structured into four main fields: (i) Social Metabolism, (ii) Land Use and Colonisations of Ecosystems, (iii) Historical Sustainability Research, and (iv) Sustainability Transitions.

The Institute of Science Communication and Higher Education Research (WIHO) focuses on two main research fields: (i) the role of media and other "publics" (including museums) for the communication of academic research results; (ii) the educational and research function of higher education institutions for society and the reflection of the relationship of the sciences and of work. Some completed and on-going projects commissioned by the EU are: (i) VOLANTE: Visions of land use transitions in Europe, 2010-2015, (prime contractor: SEC); (ii) "SUME: Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe", 2005-2008, (prime contractor: ÖIR); (iii) "MATISSE. Innovative tools and methods for Integrated Sustainability Assessment", Integrated Project, 2005-2008.
