“For at least some countries empirical evidence is accumulating that the development of the GDP and the development of material as well as immaterial welfare of large sections of the population is no longer proceeding at the same pace.”

Christoph Schmidt is President of Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI) in Essen and Professor at Ruhr University Bochum. He is Chair of the German Council of Economic Experts and a member of the Study Commission on „Growth, Wellbeing, and Quality of Life“ of the German Bundestag.

“Since national accounting was developed in the 1930s, the GDP has remained the “magic number” for politics and public discussion and it has been inferred from the GDP whether society is prospering or not. But from the beginning of national accounting it has also been clear: looking at the GDP is not sufficient to measure actual welfare.”

As Director General of Statistics Austria, Konrad Pesendorfer is responsible for statistical matters and international affairs. His previous positions include the posts of Counsellor to the Executive Board of the ECB and Vice-Chair of the Economic and Development Review Committee of the OECD.
