The Institute for the Environment and Regional Development is one of Europe's leading research institutes dealing with regional and environmental aspects of economic development. Its research topics include environmental valuation, sustainability appraisal, sustainable behaviours, ecological macroeconomics, urban and regional development, innovation clusters and multi-level governance. Institute staff have lead and contributed to FP6 and FP7 projects as well as UK and Austrian research council projects on environmental valuation, sustainability appraisal, evaluation methods, regional economic growth, innovation clusters, regional governance, social cohesion and sustainable behaviour.

The Institute for Fiscal and Monetary Policy focuses mainly on economic policy and macroeconomics, including the areas of economic growth, applied econometrics, globalisation, labour policy and international tax coordination. The Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital is a research institute founded by Wolfgang Lutz whose aim is to contribute to sustainable development by improving the analytical toolbox on which our understanding of the role of human capital in economic and societal change is based.
