SURREY, which has over 15,000 students and over four hundred research active academic staff, operates with a global vision to work in partnership with industry, commerce and the professions, as well as other institutions to the benefit of a global Community. The University boasts one of the first and now most successful and profitable UK university science park developments, contributing 1.5 Billion € per annum to the regional economy through its knowledge transfer and enterprise activities and, in collaboration with four other universities, an innovation centre on the park, providing valuable support for nascent SMEs. It is also financially sound, with a broad base of income streams leading the lowest direct contribution from UK government. The University of Surrey is a member of the 1994 Group of research-intensive UK universities, in terms of research income it ranks in the top twenty of all UK universities, with EU support making up a considerable contribution to the total awarded. Much of its research reputation has been established through the identification and support of cross-disciplinary research in key strategic themes, guided by the changing priorities of business and policy and building on existing, strong capability and notable interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) is an internationally-acclaimed centre of excellence on sustainable development. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of sustainable systems, integrating strong, engineering-based approaches with insights from the social sciences to develop action-oriented, policy-relevant responses to long-term environmental and social issues. CES sits within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS) which is the largest faculty at the University with the largest research income.
