Ivory Tower is a private research consultancy firm established in 1987 by a group of senior faculty at the Institute of International Business in Stockholm. The company was set up to conduct studies in fields of Strategy and International Management. In 1996 the company was separated from IIB, and in a management buy-out the company was taken over by one of the founders, Dr. Örjan Sölvell. Over the years, the activities of Ivory Tower have been focused on competitiveness, clusters, cluster organisations, and cluster policy.
Ivory Tower is well established in the field of clusters and cluster organisations. The first application of Professor Porter's cluster mapping methodology in Europe was done by Ivory Tower. Ivory Tower also conducted the first cluster mapping for the European Commission, the mapping of EU-10 in 2005 for DG Enterprise and Industry, and then developed the cluster strength measuring system now used in the European Cluster Observatory.

Ivory Tower is also experienced in studying and analysing cluster organisations. The GCIS, the most extensive systematic assessment of cluster organisations and to date the only one on a global scale, was carried out by Ivory Tower in 2003 and again in 2005. In 2003, Ivory Tower published The Cluster Initiative Greenbook, one of the most referenced publications on cluster initiatives among practitioners and academics. Later publishing on clusters and competitiveness includes “Clusters – Balancing Evolutionary and Constructive Forces”, 2008.
