As the original proponent of Local Agenda 21 to the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio 1992, ICLEI is today the leading inter-municipal clearinghouse on local sustainable development. With more than 1,100 member cities world-wide, ICLEI has extensive knowledge of and links with cities. ICLEI works with cities through pilot activities, training, facilitation and event organisation. The ICLEI European Secretariat has been established in 1991. Over the last years, ICLEI has been employing an annual manpower of 45-50 international academic staff persons. They are organised in seven teams, each of which is managed by a senior programme director. ICLEI runs a Brussels Office responsible for liaising and maintaining regular contact with partners and funders, and to represent ICLEI on a daily basis in the many processes and bodies it is involved in.

The ICLEI European Secretariat is certified under EMAS (Certificate: DE 12600076) and maintains a sustainability management system in line with EMAS, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 regulations that ensure a continuous improvement and integration of our ecological, economic and social performance beyond legal requirements.
