GUF (Goethe University Frankfurt) is one of the leading research universities in Germany, employing around 550 professors and 2,700 academic staff, who pursue their research in 16 departments. Within the social sciences, the University is at the forefront of research in areas such as law and economics, political theory, and international relations. According to the latest ranking of European universities carried out by the German Centre for Higher Education Development, political science at GUF belongs to the "Excellence Group" of assessed departments. Regarding the prevailing research strategies, the faculty of social sciences is closely integrated with both of the faculties of law and economics. It harbors an excellent research cluster in the domain of international governance. Moreover, it has been major partner in the long-standing Collaborative Research Center "Culture of Knowledge and Social Change", all of them funded by the German Research Foundation. In this setting, the analysis of social and political institutions and processes is addressed by most researchers. A key concern is the transformation of industrial society into a knowledge-based service society. In these research efforts, national perspectives of analysis are set in the context of Europeanisation and globalisation. Corresponding research efforts funded by the European Union involve numerous projects in recent Framework Programs.
