2014 Research Centre Conference of the Faculty of Business and Economics at Mendel University, Brno
Conference topic: What is Eurozone's Future: Policy Commitments vs. Freeriding
Brno, Czech Republic, 27-28 November 2014
The international scientific conference titled "What is Eurozone's Future: Policy Commitments vs. Freeriding" took place on November 27-28, 2014, on the premises of the Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic. In 2014, it was the 8th year of the conference, which traditionally focuses on topics dealing with processes of European economic and monetary integration.
More than 20 invited papers were presented by representatives of academia, research institutes, the European Central Bank and other institutions from Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia and the United States. The papers were presented and discussed in parallel sessions including a special session focused on presentation of research results, which were financially supported by the WWW for Europe project in the 7th Framework program. In addition, the key note speech was delivered by one of the project leaders, Peter Huber (WIFO), who addressed the issue of contemporary European demographic challenges. In his lecture, Peter Huber argued that addressing the issues raised by increasing migration to the EU requires coordinated and comprehensive policy responses on the side of European policy makers.
In summary, the following issues were discussed especially (but not exclusively) at the conference:
1) Eurozone’s Stabilization: Is It Sustainable without Structural Reforms?
2) Structural Reforms and Eurozone’s “Unions”: Fiscal, Banking, Political?
3) Structural Reforms Commitment as the Key to the Eurozone’s (And EU’s) Future?
4) Top-Down vs Bottom-Up design of Reforms?
5) The ways to a Recovery
6) North vs. South. Structural Reforms as Economic, Political and Social Phenomenon
7) “Political Union” and Financial Transfers
8) Demographics – The Key to the EU future?
