The European Union is a success story. Several expansions and the institution of a common currency can serve as proof. However, to overcome the long-term challenges of climate change, demographic trends and migration, growing inequality as well as weak growth and high unemployment rates, a long-term strategic reorientation of (economic) policy in the EU member states and at EU level is needed.

For the last four years the WWWforEurope project has worked in close communication with policy makers, the research community and stakeholders on such a strategic approach, which ultimately should set a socio-ecological transformation in motion.

The results of the research conducted by 34 research institutions and the resulting policy conclusions were presented by Karl Aiginger, project coordinator and director of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, at the House of the European Union in Vienna on March 8th, 2016. The introduction was held by Marc Fähndrich, expert for economic policy, European Commission.

The presentation was followed by a panel discussion of the project results and implementation of the policy recommendations. The discussion was moderated by Eric Frey (Der Standard) and joined by Brigitte Ederer (Chairwoman of ÖBB Supervisory Board), Franz Fischler (President European Forum Alpbach, former EU Commissioner), Sonja Steßl (State Secretary), and Jörg Wojahn (Head of Representation of the European Commission in Austria).
