Europe in global competition:

Which alternatives, which distribution effects?

Thomas Wieser

November 17th, 2014, 13:15 – 15:00

WIFO, Arsenal Object 20, 1030 Vienna

The lecture was held in German.

The debt crisis of the last years had different causes and consequences in the individual EU member states. One fundamental factor was the position of the respective countries in the European and global competition and their different adaptation strategies. Each national strategy that is being pursued has very different short- and long-term distribution effects. Thomas Wieser discussed these alternatives on the basis of practical experience with the economic policy programmes of the EU member states.

Thomas Wieser is President of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) of the European economics and finance ministers and President of the Euro Working Group. The economist (University of Innsbruck, University of Colorado in Boulder, Institute of Advanced Studies, Vienna) was Director General for Economic Policy and Financial Markets in the Austrian Ministry of Finance and chaired the OECD Committee on Financial Markets from 2005 to 2009.
