Unequal Europe - Recommendations for a more caring EU

Karl Aiginger. WWWforEurope project co-ordinator and director of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, attended the presentation of the new report titled „Unequal Europe – Recommendations for a more caring EU“, the final report of a high-level group of experts under the chairmanship of former Belgian deputy Prime Minister and social affairs Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, supported by the think tank Friends of Europe. Among the experts who worked on the report were former EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion László Andor and Anna Diamantopoulou, former Greek minister of development and competitiveness.

The "Unequal Europe" report assesses the strengths as well as the weaknesses of the social policies that have been fundamental to the creation of the EU. Based on its findings, recommendations to the new European Commission and the EU institutions as a whole have been formulated, especially actions both to reaffirm Europe’s social principles and to address its competitiveness goals. The report was presented by the Friends of Europe in Brussels on February 23rd, 2015, with László Andor, Frank Vandenbroucke and Danuta Jazlowiecka, Vice Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and many others in attendance.

At the presentation Karl Aiginger proposed to address the European problems in a joint strategy, providing at the same time more dynamics, ecological excellence and less unemployment. Such a strategy would make Europe the best socio-economic model of the world and could be offered to its neighbours as a basis for closer cooperations.
