Press conference with Franz Fischler, Jeffrey D. Sachs and Karl Aiginger

In a policy discussion on “A New Economic and Competition Model for Europe” at the 2014 European Forum Alpbach, Karl Aiginger characterised Europe as a success model in a midlife crisis. Success has been documented by Europe becoming the largest economic area in the world as measured by GDP and an area of peace as documented by the Nobel Prize as well as the attempts of prospective new members which all have to solve internal conflicts before membership.

However, Europe has lost its dynamic and did not use its ecological or social goals for promoting internal dynamics. Europe should go for a high-road strategy based on education, research and efficient institutions, rather than wage cuts. It should defy narrow national interests and enjoy diversity of cultures and preferences. Instead of exploiting fossil energies at any cost, Europe should try to raise energy efficiency and renewable resources. A new industrial policy has to be based on economics strengths, social and ecological innovations.

The lecture was followed by a discussion with Martina Schuster, Head of the Environmental Economics and Energy Department, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management; Austria, Enrico Giovannini, Former Minister of Labour and Social Policies of the Italian Republic; Professor at University of Rome, and Sabine Herlitschka, Chief Executive Officer, Infineon Technologies Austria AG.
